Best Way to Quit Smoking?

Best Way to Quit Smoking?

I found this article on the Time Wellness blog. It’s pretty interesting. A medical expert is interviewed about the best way to quit smoking. According to the article, the U.S. public health services have reviewed over 8,000 scientific articles to determine which ways to quit smoking actually work the best.

So what were their findings?

There are three core components to successfully quitting:

  1. Counseling (available for free via government quit lines)
  2. Basically involves people being identified as smokers when they go to health clinics, and having the doctors talk to them about quitting every time they show up for care.
  3. Medicines have been scientifically proven to be effective.

Medicines that the government has identified as being effective:

  • Five nicotine medicines:
  1. nicotine gum
  2. nicotine patch
  3. nicotine lozenge
  4. nasal spray
  5. inhaler
  • Two prescription pills:
  1. Zyban
  2. Chantix

Of course, it’s always recommended that you speak with your physician before you start any medicine program to stop smoking.

The article also talks about what happens when you successfully quit smoking, but find yourself having trouble quitting the medicine. And it includes some tips to help with that.

Really worth your time to check out the complete article.
